"I've always thought the refineries were strangely beautiful, in a Blade Runner kind of way, with their tiny lights and plumes of strange chemical smoke."

Interesting comment about the refineries; I can see that, too. But living close to several of them on the ship channel for half my life, my most vivid memories are of explosions, black smoke and noxious fumes that would literally melt the panty hose off your legs and the peel the paint off your car. If I ever get cancer, I think I'll know why.

True story: My mom used to babysit a curious and clever 4-year old. One day my dad, a chemical engineer at a Bayport plant, needed a ride home from work, and my mom had to bring the toddler along to pick my dad up. The little one, who called my dad Boompa, was very curious as to what my dad's job was. My mom was unsuccessful at explaining chemical engineering to the 4-year old. But as they approached the belching refinery, the little one exclaimed "Oh I see! Boompa makes The Clouds!"
