THE HEAT-2010-08-21-149

"A true Houstonian doesn't run indoors when the heat comes out to play. A true Houstonian doesn't just tough it out- a true Houston actually enjoys it, welcomes it, and hugs the warmth whilst sitting on the beautiful tree-filled backporch of a cafe. Small refuges are taken from the sun under canopy trees and umbrellas while grasping a cold beverage. He and his beverage adapt to the heat of the outdoors; he glistens with sweat as his cold beer develops the frequent appearance of condensation Houston diners are familiar with.

"Kids at the Houston Zoo - so desperately hot that as soon as they see a water fountain, they strip off their clothes and run to it. As their mothers jealously stand and watch."

"Keeping the dust down at the ballpark."

"It is now mid-October and the heat from the summer is slowly dissipating. It always makes me vaguely sad when I can no longer walk the dog in a muscle shirt and shorts at 5:30 AM. I am already missing the 90+ degree heat while I sit on the front porch and listen to the cicadas sing with a cold beer in my hand. Houston in August is the best time of year."
